Rain…

• The news for all you folks in the big city – it rained here, too! I could count on one hand the number of times in the last couple of years that Johnson Valley received enough rain to see it drip off the roof. However, starting yesterday morning, the rainfall went from mist to “occasional showers” to some downpours. This continued all night, and more is forecast.

So many times the forecast is accurate but rain only falls within sight of Johnson Valley. We welcome this kind of soft rain with time for some to soak in. And the wonderful smell of wet desert.

We are experiencing fairly warm days for the beginning of winter. The good news is, today we get three seconds of daylight more than yesterday, and tomorrow we get another six seconds more. Won’t be long before we complain about long hot summer days.

WE SANG ALONG
• The longstanding tradition of the JV Carolers touring the community and serenading some neighbors changed. We still met at three, but we stayed indoors. Bill Wright set up the keyboard and other gear in the hall, and we got to sing every song in our song sheets, instead of two or three at a time with long trips on dirt roads in between.

Though winter cold never deterred the Carolers, if we had roamed around outside last Friday we might have had our problems, not with cold, but with the howling windstorm. Our song sheets might have ended up in the Colorado River. Well, decorating the bushes in Landers anyway.

One tradition remained unchanged: our small group rewarded ourselves with Bill’s real-deal chili, along with Joanna Wright’s cheese bread and Linda Walsh’s chocolate cake. Best of all, Bill made a double batch of chili, so we have enough to share at January’s Souper Supper.

CHRISTMAS EVE BREAKFAST
• Change of plans for Saturday, December 24. The menu will be the Holiday Breakfast, including pancakes, scrambled eggs and your choice of ham, bacon or sausage, 4.00 and 6.00 according to how much you feel like eating. Coffee and small orange juice included as usual. 7:00-10:00 a.m. Ditto for New Year’s Eve.

Come on over, have a good hearty breakfast and stay to socialize. Let someone else cook!,m

NEW YEAR’S EVE
• Welcome 2017 next Saturday at the Community Center. Bring your own drinks and snacks; we celebrate starting at 8:00 p.m. until who knows?

SOUPER SUPPER
• Speaking of the Souper Supper: if you have not come to one you have missed a treat.

Bring your bowl, bring your spoon, like the Johnson Valley pioneers did before we had a kitchen, or even a Community Center. The Johnson Valley Cooks bring a variety of homemade soups to share with neighbors and visitors. It always happens on the first Saturday of the year, this year the date is Saturday, January 7.
We have already heard mention of tortilla soup, split pea, and cheeseburger soups, plus we know already we have Bill’s chili on hand in the freezer.

Enjoy sampling several hot soups and choose your favorite…and enjoy special dessert treats, too!
Donation: only 4.00 per person, kids 12 and under 2.00. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Soup at 5:00!

If you forget to bring your bowl and spoon, come on over anyway, we’ll supply them.

We wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy New Year.
