ADELANTO — Mayor Rich Kerr said the city would fully cooperate with an ongoing FBI investigation that has ensnared the Council’s mayor pro tem and interpolated a sharp sour note into Adelanto’s promising upturn after years of stagnation.

During Wednesday’s City Council meeting, only a day after Jermaine Wright was arrested to face federal charges for bribery and attempted arson, Kerr declared the city would wait until the case was adjudicated before forming an opinion.

For now, he said, its stance would be “innocent until proven guilty.” When the meeting — which carried a muted business-as-usual, if not slightly tense, tenor — had concluded, Kerr expanded some on his personal feelings of the news.

“We’re behind him 100 percent,” Kerr said about Wright, “even if he’s guilty.”

But the mayor also tempered that strong aside, adding he would never condone the behavior of which Wright is accused.

The FBI investigation into possible public corruption, a broadly focused probe into the city, remains ongoing. It’s unclear right now whether that means it might implicate any others within the city or its orbit.

Councilman Charley Glasper, who had publicly warned in January against potential improprieties spurring such an investigation, said he was “disappointed” to hear about the accusations faced by Wright, but he also sought to clear his own name.

“I am happy to say,” he said, “I’m not part of it.”

Meanwhile, Kerr said Wednesday’s comments on the matter would be the last statement coming from City Hall until the case is finalized.

Wright, who remains in custody, is scheduled to appear in federal court in Riverside on Monday.
