Two police officers were killed and one was wounded in a shooting in Palm Springs on Saturday, plunging the community into mourning as police searched for the suspect.

Dozens of police massed outside a house on the 2700 block of Cypress Road where a suspect appeared to be holed up. Officers took defensive positions behind a patrol car and a concrete wall.

“Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers,” Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference, his voice shaking with emotion. “I am awake in a nightmare right now.”

The slain police were Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega. Reyes said Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday. Zerebny is the mother of a 4-month-old baby, he said.

The officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 12:18 p.m. and were at the door of a house when the shooting began, Reyes said.

“It was a simple family disturbance and he elected to open fire on a few of the guardians of our city,” Reyes said.

“They were out there every day with boots on the ground for our community,” he added. “They gave it all for you.”

    Enough is enough.

I serve to protect all the people.

I am tired of wearing a black ribbon across my badge.

When does the real majority of people rise up in protest against those that murder my brothers and those that serve all of you?

When do the owners of football teams bench players that refuse to honor the Anthem of this country? How many more officers must get murdered by the killers?

I am at tears right now and I am fed up with the whatever lives matters.

    Cops lives matters too!

Like Steve said, “Cops lives matters too!”

    So sad.

I want to hug my wife and kids. This country is falling apart and there is nothing I can do.

“So sad” is heartfelt, The question is: How would the NRA respond to this?

Larry why would you ask such an amazingly dumb question?

This guy is a felon, a gang banger, and a person restricted from gun ownership. He had no 2nd Amendment Rights.

What do you think “Black Lives Matter” have to say?

What about the Legislature and Gov. Brown who let this lowlife out of prison early have to say?

      What about the courts?

How do you feel about it?

The guy who killed those schoolkids in Connecticut wasn’t a gangbanger. The guy who shot up the theatre in Colorado wasn’t a gangbanger. The guy who shot up the campus in Oregon wasn’t a gangbanger. Too many guns. Too few controls. What’s the answer Dan?
