To supporters and friends of the First District,

I
am writing to inform you that I have decided not to seek a third term
as Supervisor of the First District for San Bernardino County. The
decision has been a very difficult one, as I have truly enjoyed serving
you as First District Supervisor for the past seven years.

Some
of my proudest endeavors have been launching our “Made in the High
Desert” Manufacturing Summit and Veterans Resource Fair. Both of these
annual events have allowed us to serve our local residents by connecting
them to resources within the County. Our young people have been amazed
at the diverse job opportunities available to consider and our veterans
have gained helpful information about benefits, claims assistance, and
job opportunities.

During
my tenure as First District Supervisor, the County has faced many
challenges. Despite the difficulties, there are many accomplishments to
be proud of. Some noteworthy achievements include:

  • A Technical Training Center
is in process of being established in the High Desert through the
collaborative efforts of San Bernardino County Workforce Development
Board, Victor Valley College, private employers and business partners.
Final steps are in place to provide additional learning opportunities
    locally for needed trade skills.
  • The Vision2Succeed Initiative
launched in late 2018 through the collaborative efforts of Workforce
Development and the County Administrative Office. This initiative is
designed to strengthen the career skills of our local workforce and
enhance their qualifications to support existing employers and attract
new employers to our County. A skilled workforce encourages a vibrant
    economy.
  • Road and Infrastructure improvements
have been an important focus area with some great progress. Through
collaboration with our local municipalities and state agency, there has
been investment in reconstruction of roadways to the benefit of
residents. The need for alternate routes and thoroughfares through our
District is an ongoing challenge that will continue to remain at the
    forefront of discussions.
  • Through advocacy work with the District Attorney office, attention has been given to address Welfare and Workers Compensation Fraud in San Bernardino County. The impact of this work has resulted in significant savings to both taxpayers and employers.
  • GenerationGo!
was established by the County through our Workforce Development Board.
This program provides internship opportunities for high school seniors
to be dual enrolled with a community college and gain on-the-job
training experience with a local employer, allowing a student and
employer to find a good career fit for long term success.
  • Community Advocacy is
a continual effort of staff to help connect our residents with
resources within the County. We have also collaborated with the Sheriff
Department and Code Enforcement on clean up efforts by having inmates
assist with clearing significant tonnage of trash and tires. This has
greatly helped to address some of the illegal dumping in our desert
    areas.

Personally,
I am proud of the allocation of special funds which has allowed our
Sheriff department an opportunity to conduct specialized crime sweeps.
These sweeps have proven to be an effective way to keep the pressure on
and deter criminals. The New Hope Program has also been established as a
collaborative effort between the Sheriff Department, Department of
Behavioral Health, Public Health and Abundant Living Church and become a
vital tool in helping to reduce recidivism in county jails.

Although
I will no longer be serving as a County Supervisor after November 2020,
I plan to stay actively involved as a business and community member. I
am committed to ensure that our District receives the best education and
economic opportunities possible and will continue to advocate for the
growth of jobs in our region.

I
encourage members of all our communities to stay actively engaged in
advocating for the many great things we have within the First District.
Your involvement is pivotal in our trajectory forward as a District and
the County as a whole.

With
over a year of my term still remaining and much to accomplish in that
window of time, I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow
colleagues, as well as the federal, state and local elected officials
with whom I have had the pleasure to serve alongside. Also, my sincere
thanks to County CEO Gary McBride and staff who have been a great
support to the efforts of our office during my service. To the business
and community leaders who have become treasured partners, thank you for
your commitment and collaboration that has brought new opportunities to
the First District. And to my supporters, friends and family, I express
my heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to serve. Thank you for trusting
me to help lead the First District to a greater level of service to our
constituents. It has been an absolute honor.
