JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s prestigious Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division continues its award-winning “Fridays! Reader’s Theater” series with Ntozake Shange’s Obie Award-winning and Tony Award nominated theatrical masterpiece, FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF, on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 7pm at the Cultural Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater.
Directed by and starring Desert Theatre League multi-award nominee and Playhouse veteran, Miri Hunter, alongside a powerful cast of fresh acting talents, Adjoa Aikens, Adia Joëlle, Lisa Diaz, and Alpha Richards, FOR COLORED GIRLS continues the thought-provoking reader’s theater series with a collection of stories that have riveted audiences the world over.  FOR COLORED GIRLS was first staged in 1974 as a work in progress.  Growing in popularity, especially among African American and Latino audiences, it has since been performed on Broadway, adapted for television on PBS as part of The American Playhouse Series, and inspired a feature film version starring Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, and Anika Noni Rose.  This groundbreaking “choreopoem” is a spellbinding collection of vivid prose and free verse narratives capturing the brutal, tender, and dramatic lives of contemporary Black women.  FOR COLORED GIRLS offers a transformative, riveting evening of provocative music and poetry, weaving interconnected stories of love, empowerment, struggle, and loss into a complex representation of sisterhood.
“When I first saw this play I was mesmerized,” said Director Miri Hunter.  “It felt like one of the many nights when I was a child and my mother, her sisters and all of the female cousins would play cards, music, and tell stories.  They are all events that sanctify life and allow us, as the playwright says, to ‘sing the song of our possibilities.’ ”
Where directors, playwrights, and actors rehearse and present exceptional reader’s theater, the Playhouse’s “Fridays! Reader’s Theater” series showcases superb acting talent in a professional setting with an intent to create thoughtful discussion and social community for live theater actors and enthusiasts.  FOR COLORED GIRLS suggested rating is R, for some intense adult themes and strong language.  General admission tickets are only $10 and include one drink ticket.  A cash bar is also available.
