TWENTYNINE PALMS — The Twentynine Palms Historical Society is proud to present the 2019 Old Timer of the Year Honoree.

This
year’s “Old Timer of the Year” honoree is Pat Rimmington. The “Old
Timer of the Year” program was created in 2014 to honor early or
long-time residents who contributed significantly to the development or
betterment of the Twentynine Palms’ community. The program is intended
to honor “everyday heroes” whose contributions and efforts over the
years have largely gone unsung.

Pat
Rimmington and her husband Sid purchased the John Meyer adobe in 1977
as a vacation home and moved here permanently in 1988. During research
for the restoration and subsequent maintenance of her adobe, Pat became
an expert on adobe construction and on the heritage of local historic
adobe structures, becoming known as “The Mud Lady”. She wrote the book
“The Adobes of Twentynine Palms”, which tells the stories of the WWI
veterans, pioneers, and homesteaders that built them. Pat’s expertise,
readily shared with others, has helped preserve and restore many of our
adobes.

Pat
has been heavily involved with the Twentynine Palms Historical Society
since her arrival and has served as President. She and previous honoree
Cheryl Erickson have been the driving force behind the Society’s Oral
History Project. She has conducted dozens of oral interviews and
transcribed them into researchable archives. Pat also transcribed
numerous interviews and documents for both the San Bernardino County 29
Palms Branch Library and the Joshua Tree National Park archives.

Pat
was employed by the Joshua Tree Natural History Association as a tour
guide at Keys Ranch and as a visitor services ambassador at Joshua Tree
National Park visitor center in 29 Palms.

Pat
has written many articles of local history that have been printed in
numerous publications. She was one of the original writers for the Sun
Runner magazine and wrote a monthly column for many years.

For
her contributions to recording area history and her continued support
of the community and the Twentynine Palms Historical Society, we are
proud to honor Pat Rimmington as our 2019 Old Timer of the Year.
