• Reminder, tomorrow, Saturday, April 29, you can join the Poker Run at the Yucca Mesa Community Center starting at 8:30 a.m. Each entry is 15.00, 25.00 per couple. You draw your first card before 9:30, and enjoy a steak burrito for breakfast! The address is 3133 Balsa Ave., just off Aberdeen Rd.

You will receive an itinerary the addresses and times for each stop, with a map, then you make your leisurely tour around the Homestead Valley, drawing cards at the Flamingo Heights Community Center, Landers Belfield Hall, the Morongo Basin Historical Society and the Johnson Valley Community Center.

Make new acquaintances, find out what happens around this high desert locale, look at the wildflowers and the sights along Scenic 247. Enjoy the hospitality at each stop, including snacks, a hot dog lunch, and an Ice Cream Social.

Travel the entire tour easily by car; no four-wheel-drive needed on this route.

Draw your fifth card before 2:30 at the Ice Cream Social in Johnson Valley! Everyone is welcome to the Ice Cream Social, Poker Run players’ entry fees include the ice cream, everyone else can get a scoop for 1.00, a banana split for 5.00, or a root beer float for 3.00. You can participate in the gift drawings, too.

You must be present to win if you have the best 5-Card Draw hand. 1st place, $150; 2nd place, $100; 3rd place $50!

The Homestead Valley Community Council hosts this get-together – it’s our voice to the county, state and federal agencies on issues that affect us all.

• We’ve been talking about it for a month, but it’s almost here: next Saturday afternoon, May 6, is the Johnson Valley Open Air Cinco de Mayo Fiesta.

We hope the winds all blow away, so we can enjoy our tacos and margaritas outdoors while looking at the Johnson Valley scenery or watching the model trains in the colorful Paul Van Hook Desert Dreams Garden.

Time: 2:00-5:00 p.m. Only 10.00 per person admission includes beef, pork or chicken tacos, two salsas special dessert treats, a free margarita or soft drink, and a free sombrero while the supply lasts!

Come to the lobby of the Community Center to get your entry wristband and the free drink ticket. The Taco Stand is serving between 2:00 and 4:00. Tables will be set up in the parking lot; there will be two margarita bars, one at the Taco Stand, one at the Cantina on the old road in the Garden next door. Bring your own seating if possible.

From Scenic 247 after mile marker 21, turn at the red Johnson Valley sign onto Larrea Rd., go 1-3/4 miles to Quailbush Rd.

• Johnson Valley has expressed much shock and distress at the news that Garry Lindt had passed away suddenly on Monday, April 17.

His son Jay has had a scramble to keep H2O2U Water Hauling serving customers and get his own work done, too. However, he says don’t wait to call when your tank runs dry because if everyone does that all at the same time, they might have to wait longer than usual.

Call Jay’s cell phone, 626-482-5761. The home number is the same, 760-364-9262.

Everyone is invited to a celebration of life for Garry on Sunday, May 7, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at the Johnson Valley Community Center. It will be a snacks and finger food potluck if you wish to bring something to share with friends and neighbors.

p.s. The Johnson Valley Journal mails this Monday, but had to go to the printer before memorial plans could be announced.
