California Highway Patrol Contact: Officer Casey Simmons Morongo Basin Area Public Information Officer 63683- 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA 92252 (760) 366-3707 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 23, 2020 DUI CRASH WITH INJURIES IN JOSHUA TREE On July 22, 2020 at approximately 12:23 pm, Kathy Christensen, 63-year-old from Joshua Tree, was driving a 2005 Ford F150, northbound on Park Boulevard, with passenger Mack Moran, 41-year-old from Joshua Tree, and stopped at the intersection with SR 62 in Joshua Tree. Mark Austin, 56-year-old from Yucca Valley, was driving a 2003 Ford Expedition northbound on Park Boulevard approaching the intersection with Park Boulevard. Due to Austin’s level of intoxication, Austin failed to slow and stop when approaching another vehicle and highway, the right front of the Expedition crashed into the left rear of the F150. The Expedition continued across the highway on Park Boulevard, drifted right across the intersection with Commercial Street and crashed on the northeast property located on the corner of Park Boulevard and Commercial Street. The F150 continued into the intersection where it came to rest. After the collision, Austin was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. Christensen and Moran both sustained minor injuries. Seatbelts were used by all involved parties. Austin was arrested for DUI causing injuries, cleared for booking at Desert Regional Medical Center and booked into the West Valley Detention Center. This collision is being investigated by Officer McNutt. The California Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to designate a sober driver and don’t drink and drive.
