A Caltrans employee was treated at a hospital Saturday morning after being assaulted by a member of a trash crew who then fled into a Riverside neighborhood, Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the eastbound 60 Freeway at the Main Street offramp about 7:45 a.m. on July 28. A crew of people who had been sentenced to picking up trash — Caltrans calls them “probationers,” Kasinga said — was working there when the attack happened.

There was no word Saturday afternoon on the circumstances of the assault or whether the man had been captured. A CHP spokesman declined to say much about the case because the suspect was at large and the investigation was continuing.
